White Lie VS. Half Truth

Contributed by Heather Brisco

Are white lies and half truths the same as lying?  Regular lies often hurt people.  I know that it is said that concealing the truth is a crime (well it really can be in some cases) and a travesty.  Lying is not only deceptive but destructive as well.  Sometimes I have found it nessasary to tell white lies and half truths.  Usually they don't hurt a person...But protect them.  We all have told them at some point in our lives just to be tactful if anything else.
I don't feel guilty about telling them because they are my second nature.  Try to understand me.  Some great examples of a 'white lie' are these; "I loved your cookind/dinner, Mom"  "I liked the gift you got me Aunt Mae." While 'half truths' are more like "We watched movies (and made out)," or "I had a drink (and then three more)." Ultimately I beleive the difference between a 'white lie' and a 'half truth' is ; white lies are for other people to feel better about themselves while half truth are more for protecting you and allowing people to feel more favorably towards you and your minimized transgressions.
